There are a few different types and durations of juice fasts and there is no “right” or “wrong” as long as you are getting enough calories and nutrients to remain healthy. The first, and most common, type of juice cleanse is one that incorporates both fruit juices and vegetable juices and lasts for three to ten days.
People who follow this often report that the sugars in the juice make them shaky if they use too much. To combat this, it is often recommended that you use fruits for your breakfast juice but limit the rest of your daily consumption to either no fruit or just one fruit element in a vegetable juice blend.
Some people refrain from fruit juice altogether and drink vegetable juice only. There are also people who cleanse for extended amounts of time; sometimes for as long as forty days. This is very difficult to stick with however, so it’s not nearly as common as juice cleansing with a shorter duration.

How to Juice Cleanse
Your body is not used to functioning on just juice, so you will need to prepare it by cutting out dairy and meat products. Start decreasing your intake a week or so before you plan to start your juice fast so that you have none the day or two before. Also, in order to free your body up to concentrate on cleansing and healing, you should quit smoking and drinking alcohol a week before you fast.
Some people report headaches, dizziness and hunger during the first couple of days, so most experts on the subject say that it is fine to munch on a few raw vegetables such as broccoli or celery in between you juices to help alleviate this. The basic standard to follow is that if you feel hungry, drink your juice. Also, organic fruits and vegetables are ideal because they don’t have any chemicals, so you aren’t polluting your body while you are trying to cleanse it.
You may experience what is called a cleansing crisis within the first few days. This may cause headaches, bad breath and body odor but advocates of juicing attribute this to toxins in your blood being pushed out of every available opening and it will pass, but there is nothing that you can do about it; you just have to wait it out.
Juice Cleansing is a wonderful way to detoxify your body, especially your liver and colon, and give it back its power to heal itself. As with anything, there are people who should refrain though. If you are pregnant, diabetic or have other severe health problems, juice fasting may not be for you. If, however, you are just feeling fatigued, bloated, and unhealthy in general, juice fasting may be the way to go!
